julia . . . are you following the predicament of leslie out in redwood california?
they are shutting down pete’s harbor where she’s docked. she lives aboard with her blind lab dog
    named lily.
she is a minimalist . . . well really just living the simple life aboard her boat.
you can link to her from my blog or . . . i’ll just put it here if you haven’t seen her blog and would like to . . .

some neat posts of liveaboard boats. they’re going through a hard time right now, losing their
beloved pete’s marina to developers. i think captain fritter mentioned it though in one of his
recent posts, come to think of it.
good luck with your own dream! you’ll make it!
just hope you get a marina not set upon by greedy developers!

Where’s the porn? I see no boat pics! Whatcha’ thinking about buying?

    • I know! I don’t know what happened to it – I tried the reblogging thing from another fellow blogger who posted it and it didn’t work for some reason.
I guess you could stay I’m still weighing the options…I like a nonsuch, benetaeu, and the cats are pretty nice looking, but I’m not so sure…feel like it would be too much like trying to sail my house and might lack the real sailing experience. I still have time to decide – need to finish getting all the debt paid off and finish getting rid of all the STUFF I’ve acquired – cant figure out how I accumulated so many things!

No worries, I can imagine it. Nonsuch’s are expensive! Beneteaus are okay until you decide to really start cruising and really start heading offshore. Cats are awesome unless you lose control. The speed is a nice trade off though, as is the shallow draft. Concerns for repairs and haulout/docking come to mind though.

Geographically where are you planning on living aboard? Are you going to stay in one place, or cruise? Seasonally or full time? Also, don’t be put off by the real world experience. A little over a year ago I’d never sailed in my life. Currently I’m finishing up a transit of my first boat from the Virgin Islands to Virginia that included a 7 day offshore passage. You’ll get the experience if you hang around boats and sailors long enough.

As to the liquidation, my experience was such: Set a date. Go through and pick out the easy things that you can get rid of no problem. Sell what you can (ebay/craigslist/etc), donate what will sell at thrift shop and trash the rest. If you just keep repeating that, you’ll soon find yourself not so cluttered. Best of luck to you! Hope to see you out there on the big blue some day!

    • Thanks so much for the kind words! I actually have seen a couple of nonsuch’s that were at a pretty decent price and looked to be in good shape – but only have see pictures and the profile writeups and they can be deceiving. I’m not real sure exactly where I want to be, other than somewhere warm…possibly Florida for a bit, maybe do a little cruising to the Bahamas…still trying to figure it all out.

I’ve been following your blog and your sail route. It’s very interesting and I’m looking forward to when you are able to catch a good Internet connection and upload some pics!

Heh. Having just been through the Bahamas and Florida, I wouldn’t consider either terribly warm! I went in to the docks when we checked in with customs in the Bahamas and I was sporting a full down coat and beanie. It was pretty funny, especially since I normally like it cold. Too much time in the warmer latitudes has gotten to me. Be sure to check sailingtexas.com and sailboatlistings.com for for sale ads that you generally won’t find anywhere else. That’s where I found mine. Good luck, keep me updated! I’ll be posting pics on the blog after the first…right now I’ve posted in support of a fellow blogger @ http://lesleycarter.wordpress.com. She’s pretty awesome. Pics on facebook in the meantime.
